The largest private plot on the island, and the quietest.
Onyx is a long, low house on a 32,000 sq ft plot at the northern tip of Jumeirah Bay, screened on three sides by mature planting and open on the fourth to the water. It was built for a single family over four years and has never been offered openly.
The house is organised as a spine: a 40-metre gallery running the length of the plot, with rooms hung off it on both sides. Service accommodation, garaging and staff quarters are buried in a semi-basement, so nothing utilitarian appears at ground level.
Materials are dark and deliberately unglamorous — charred timber, board-marked concrete, bronze mesh — softened entirely by the planting. It is the most private residence we have handled on the island.

Architecture
Built to be
lived in slowly.
The elevations are clad in charred cedar, laid vertically and left to weather. Where the timber meets the ground it gives way to board-marked concrete, so the base of the house reads as part of the terrain rather than as a plinth.
The gallery spine is top-lit along its full 40 metres by a continuous north-facing clerestory. Because the light is northern it never falls directly on the walls, and the art hung along the gallery needs no additional protection.
